Prayer for the Canonization of the Venerable Servant of God

Father Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen.PLEASE REPORT ALL FAVORS RECEIVED:                   THE FATHER MCGIVNEY GUILD

Christian manhood

The founding of the Knights of Columbus was Father McGivney's expression of the ideal of Christian manhood. The image of a knight conjures up a physical and spiritual ideal that was close to Father McGivney's heart. The vision he imparted to the first members of the Order in 1882 has attracted Catholic men ever since. Brother Knights helping one another in the task of becoming men and of shaping our children and our children's children is an enduring aspect of membership in the Knights. Giving good example, helping those in need, showing what true fraternity means and learning to relax in truly manly ways are part and parcel of the fraternal order founded by Father McGivney.

The Order's insurance program represents the founder's concern for the material needs of the family. This is paralleled by the fraternal interaction in council meetings and family gatherings. It was all of a piece for Father McGivney. The Church beatifies and canonizes men and women so that we will have examples and ideals to urge us on to greater holiness and dedication to God. In Father McGivney, we have a comprehensive vision of Christian manhood and a program to help men grow to full maturity. Our desire to see Father McGivney named "Blessed" is the desire to make known his vision and ideals. Father McGivney, protector of Christian family life, pray for us.

The above is an excerpt from "Christian Manhood," Columbia Magazine, July 2006, page 11 – by Dominican Father Gabriel B. O'Donnell – postulator for the cause of sainthood of the Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney.      [Return Top of Page]

Who Are The Knights?

The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by a 29-year-old parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, in the basement of St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Today, more than a century later, the Knights of Columbus has become the largest lay organization in the Catholic Church. The Order has been called "the strong right arm of the Church," and has been praised by popes, presidents and other world leaders, for support of the Church, programs of evangelization and Catholic education, civic involvement and aid to those in need. As recently as 1992, Mother Teresa of Calcutta praised the Knights in a speech on the occasion of her reception of the first Knights of Columbus Gaudium et Spes Award. Thanks to the inspired work of Father McGivney—as well as that of millions of other Knights over the past century—the Knights of Columbus now stands at its pinnacle of membership, benefits and service. Currently, there are over 1.7 million Knights of Columbus—more than ever before in our Order's history. Together with their families, the Knights are nearly 6 million strong. In addition, from the first local council in New Haven, the Order has grown to more than 13,000 councils in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Panama, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan and now, Poland. Each year, the Order continues this strong growth.

CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS, VOLUNTEER SERVICE, AND INSURANCE

As the Order has grown, its benevolence has multiplied. The Order continues to break all previous records for charitable contributions and volunteer service. During 2006, Knights of Columbus worldwide donated more than 143 million dollars to charity and logged over 68 million hours of volunteer service. Translated to dollars that is about $1.3 billion (@ 18.77 per hour). Father McGivney's founding vision for the Order also included establishing a life insurance program to provide for the widows and orphans of deceased members. The Order's insurance program has expanded sub-stantially to serve more effectively the Knights' growing membership. Year after year, the Knights of Columbus has earned the highest possible quality ratings for financial soundness from A.M. Best and Standard & Poor's. The Order provides the highest quality insurance and annuity products to its members, along with many other fraternal benefits.

CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY, AND PATRIOTISM

Knights of Columbus are Catholic gentlemen committed to the exemplification of charity, unity, fraternity, patriotism, and defense of the priesthood. The Order is consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Order is unequivocal in its loyalty to the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is firmly committed to the protection of human life, from conception to natural death, and to the preservation and defense of the family. It was on these bedrock principles that the Order was founded over a century ago and remains true to them today.

If you want to join this great organization of Catholic men, contact one of the men found on the "Officers" link. At Christ the King Council 3419 you will find brother Knights working to fulfill the central mission of the Order: striving in charitable works; serving the Church and unified in following its teachings; supporting brother Knights in their temporal and spiritual needs; acting for the good of their country; and giving aid to widows, orphans, the sick and the poor. This is Father McGivney's dream, echoing across the century, and living today in the hearts of his brothers and all of those they touch.
